1st Place:  Catherine Fan & Jessica Li are grade 12 students from Old Scona Academic High School who won the $2,000 first place prize with a study titled “Identification of the Antibacterial Activity of Saccharomyces boulardii Against Clostridium difficile“.  Catherine and Jessica worked under the direct supervision of Ms. Avena Ross and the mentorship of Dr. John Vederas from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta.  Catherine and Jessica will be representing Edmonton at the National SABC on May 9-10, 2011.

2nd Place:  Ashlee Yang & Eric Xu, also grade 12 students from Old Scona Academic High School, won the $1,500 second place prize for their project titled “Design of Biocompatible Polymers and Polymer Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Gene Delivery”.  Ashlee and Eric were mentored by Dr. Ravin Narain from the Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta.

3rd Place:  Joshua Kim is a grade 12 student from Jasper Place High School who won the $1,000 third place prize for his project titled “Effect of Cromoglycate (DSCG) on Influenza A Virus Infected Mast Cells”.  Joshua was under the direct supervision of Dr. TaeChul Moon and the mentorship of Dr. Dean Befus from the Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta.

4th Place:  Pradyumna Kedarisetti is a grade 11 student from Old Scona Academic High School and the winner of our $750 fourth place prize. His project was titled “Characterization and Detection of Cyclic Protein Sequences Using in-silico Approach” and he worked under the mentorship of Dr. Lukasz Kurgan from the Department of  Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta.

5th Place:  Danny Huang & Jaclynn Wong, grade 12 students from Harry Ainley High School are the winners of the $500 fifth place prize for their project “The Role of O-Glycosylation in Regulating Beta-Catenin Function During Cancer Progression”.  Danny and Jaclynn worked under the direct supervision of Jacqueline Ha and the mentorship of Dr. Sujata Persad of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta.

Best Elevator Pitch: The $250 elevator pitch prize went also to our 1st place winners Jessica Li & Catherine Fan.
